New Jersey

New Jersey is a state in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, on the Atlantic Ocean. New Jersey is the only state which has no straight vertical or horizontal lines in its border.

Date first visited by Europeans: Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian Explorer in the service of the French explored the coast of what would become New Jersy in 1524.

The Dutch laid claim to what is now New Jersey, sometime before 1630

Date admitted to US: 1787, as one of thirteen original colonies

Capital: Trenton

Largest City: Newark

Landscape:

The southern and central part of the state is a part of the Atlantic Coastal plain and features gentle rolling hills and sandy soil that is poor in nutrients. Much of this is covered with pine trees that thrive in the poor soil.

The Atlantic Coastal Plain gives way to the Piedmont region, which is slightly rockier and typically a higher elevation. These in turn give way to the highlands of new jersey, which are a part of the Appalachian Mountains. The highest point in the state, the very descriptively named High Point is a part of these highlands.

The southern interior has the “pine barrens”, an area of mixed pine and oak forest, much less densely populated than the rest of the state. Much of northern and southern New Jersey is in effect continuations of Manhattan and Philadelphia, respectively.

The first nearly complete dinosaur skeleton was found in Haddonfield, New Jersey, in 1858, which started the scientific field of Paleontology. (WRONG. It was studied by the ancient Greeks and before this event in the Westren World).

The spaces of the U.S. version of the board game Monopoly produced by Parker Brothers are all derived from locations in Atlantic City which is in New Jersey. Parker Brothers did not invent the game, but they were the ones who popularized it. (Needed Clarification)

Atlantic City is where the street names in Monopoly come from.

New Jersey has the highest population density of any state in the United States. It averages over 1100 residents per square mile. Much of the densest regions are near the nearby cities of New or Philadelphia, or along the Jersey Shore.

The first baseball game and the first intercollegiate football game were played in New Jersey.
