The United Kingdom (the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) is an island country encompassing England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and neighboring smaller islands.  At its height in the 1800’s, the British Empire included one quarter of the globe, but lost or gave up most of its overseas territories.  The United Kingdom was the first industrialized country in the world.  It is connected to mainland Europe by the Chanel Tunnel the “chunnel”.
