The island of Ireland is a fertile green
island off the west coast of the island of Great Britain (the countries
of England, Wales and Scotland). Ireland (the country) touches no other
countries except Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom.
To the west of Ireland is the Atlantic Ocean—it the west-most part of
Europe except for Iceland, further north. After centuries of domination
by the English, Ireland became an independent country in 1921.
