Iceland is an island country in the North Atlantic Ocean just south of the Arctic Circle between Greenland and the United Kingdom. The island of Iceland is of volcanic origin; giving the country hot springs as well as glaciers. Iceland boasts the world’s oldest parliament, the Alþingi (Alting in English) which first met in 930. Iceland was for centuries under the control of Norway and then Denmark. Independence was declared in 1944.
