The Gambia

The Gambia is the smallest country in mainland Africa, situated on both sides of the Gambia River, and completely surrounded by Senegal, except for a short coast line on the Atlantic Ocean. It is in West Africa, on the "bulge" that extends towards the west, north of the Bight of Biafra.
The Gambia was first colonized by the Portuguese, and then taken over by the British in 1765. Like many colonies in west Africa, the original colony was built for the slave trade. It became independent from the United Kingdom in 1965.

Area: 11,300 sq km
Population: 1,967,709
