Slovakia was the western part of Czechoslovakia until 1993 when the Czech Republic and Slovakia peaceably split into separate countries.  Besides the Czech Republic to the northwest,  Slovakia is bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south and Austria to the southeast.  Slovakia was the poorer and less populated part of Czechoslovakia.  As a part of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia was under the domination of the Soviet Union from the end of World War II until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
