Slovakia was the western
part of Czechoslovakia until 1993 when the Czech Republic and Slovakia
peaceably split into separate countries. Besides the Czech Republic to
the northwest, Slovakia is bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to
the east, Hungary to the south and Austria to the southeast. Slovakia
was the poorer and less populated part of Czechoslovakia. As a part of
Czechoslovakia, Slovakia was under the domination of the Soviet Union
from the end of World War II until the collapse of the Soviet Union in
1991. |
