Moldova is a small, country sandwiched between the Ukraine and Romania. It almost, but not quite, touches the Black Sea.  Moldova was controlled by the Ottoman Empire until 1812, when it became part of the Soviet Union.  An independent country since 1991, Russian troops remain in, and support, the self-proclaimed Transnistria Republic east of the Dniester River.
