Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic countries.  To the north is Latvia, to the east Russia and Belarus, to the south Poland and Kaliningrad (part of Russia).  The Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga lie to the west.  Lithuania was annexed into the Soviet Union in 1940.  Lithuania declared its independence from Russia in 1990 and is now a member of the EU and NATO.
